Mad Hatter Costume
I love this halloween costume idea – the Johnny Depp Mad Hatter costume. Johnny Depp of course played the Mad Hatter in the 2010 release of the movie Alice in Wonderland. Depp’s portrayal of the Mad Hatter is what made the movie – and the Hatter’s outfit is unmistakable making it a very good choice for a halloween costume. Let’s start by seeing the look we are going for:
Mad Hatter Costume for Girls
Before we continue I want to say while yes, the Mad Hatter is traditionally male, don’t think that this halloween costume is only a choice for the guys! This is also a great and really cute girl halloween costume! To make the Mad Hatter costume into a girl costume – instead of pants, you’ll wear a skirt or dress. All the concepts that we talk about below will apply – brightly colored clothing, white face, and top hat! Add some colored and striped or polka-dotted socks and you’ll complete your outfit. Here are some costumes to give you inspiration…
Johnny Depp’s Top Hat
The most important part of the Mad Hatter Costume is what you’re wearing on your head!! The Mad Hatter in the new version of Alice in Wonderland almost always wears a type of hat called a Top Hat, and it sits jauntily on the very top of his head. He is after all a HATTER! So you will need to either make or buy a Top Hat! For women, it can be hard to get the top hat to sit and stay on the top so some hats that you purchase also include a headband to help it stay in place – a very nice touch!
The Red Wig
Another key aspect of the Mad Hatter Costume is the hair! Johnny Depp’s version of the character had crazy curly red hair sprouting out from underneath his hat. It added to the air of “craziness” of the Hatter.
Mad Hatter Face Makeup
The Mad Hatter’s face should look stark-raving mad!! You can find face makeup specifically put together to help you create the look, or you can just buy some halloween makeup – basically you will need to whiten your whole face and add some red around your eyes.
The Hatter’s outfit
The Hatter’s outfit is about as Halloween as they come – you’ll need to pull together all kind of brightly colored crazy pieces. Purple pants, green shirt, anything with colored spots and stripes work great. Don’t forget to top off your outfit with a jacket – the Hatter does after all like to consider himself “dressed up”. The jacket should be somewhat calmer compared to the rest of the halloween costume.
