If you want to be someone for halloween that noone else is going to be you should be a gnome! The gnome costume is very distinctive and very fun to wear and is a good choice for girls, boys, and adults! Gnomes are mythical creatures from folklore that became widely known during the 1800s. They are small human creatures (about 2 feet tall) that live underground and supposedly guard hoards of treasure. They enjoy fishing and napping and are often depicted as doing one of these two activities! In general, gnomes are said to be good-natured, although there are occasionally evil gnomes! Starting in the 19th century, gnomes were commercially made into little figurines that could be placed in the yard – “Garden Gnomes”. Garden gnomes (or lawn gnomes) supposedly could ward off evil spirits and sorcery.
What you need to make your gnome costume:
1. Gnome Hat
First and foremost, in order to be a gnome for halloween, you will need a gnome hat. Gnomes are always depicted wearing a tall pointy hat – typically red in color (think Papa Smurf!) The hat is basically just a red cone that sits atop the head, so if you cannot find one to buy, you can make your own gnome hat at home with very little trouble. All you need to do is cut out a triangular shaped pattern into some red felt, glue the edges together, stitch in a little elastic around the band so that it holds in place, and presto! You have a homemade gnome hat!
2. Thick White Beard
Gnomes almost always usually adult men, and also are always depicted as having a full, thick white beard, think about Santa Clause’s beard and you’re on the right track! If beards make you itch, you can always opt for a full face latex gnome mask – the added benefit of the full mask is that it gives you the thick bulbous nose and rosy cheeks traditionally seen on the best outfits!
3. The gnome costume
For the adult costume version of this character, long pants and a matching vest or belted jacket are the items of clothing you’ll need for the rest of this mythical creature’s outfit. For a kids gnome costume, instead of pants, you can substitute shorts. Also on the kids version you can add some flowers to the outfit to give the halloween outfit a kinder lawn gnome or garden gnome appearance! This touch works especially well on a toddler or girl costume as it gives it the extra “cute” factor!
Evil Gnome Costume
Gnomes are not necessarily evil creatures – they typically will hang around your lawn or garden sleeping, or relax under a tree near a pond fishing. So for the most part if you choose to be this creature for halloween, you can put on a smiling jolly face! There are however the occasional evil gnomes out there! In order to be an evil gnome, just add an ax, an evil expression, and maybe a dark green evil color to your character’s outfit and you’re set! A nice extra touch is green skin. Be sure however to keep the pointy gnome hat so you don’t get confused with an elf!!
